What is raum&designstrategien?
It is an interdisciplinary program at the intersection of architecture, art, design, and media. It explores space in a broad and dynamic sense—social, cultural, political, medial, virtual, and ecological.
What degrees can I obtain?
You can study for a Bachelor of Arts (BA), which takes 6 semesters (180 ECTS),
or a Master of Arts (MA), which takes 4 semesters (120 ECTS).

Bachelor Program
What are the main learning goals of the Bachelor?
Students acquire fundamental skills in spatial and design-related project development, with emphasis on conceptual work, material experimentation, prototyping, digital media, and individual artistic positions.
How is the Bachelor curriculum structured?
The program begins with a 2-semester orientation phase, followed by 4 semesters of integrated project studies. It combines project-based artistic work with theoretical, technical, and interdisciplinary modules.
Master Program
What are the main learning goals of the Master?
Students develop advanced artistic and professional skills in spatial project development. The focus is on critical and innovative problem-solving, interdisciplinary project work, and preparation for doctoral studies.
How is the Master curriculum structured?
The program is modular and includes:
- Central artistic subject (raum&designstrategien)
- Transdisciplinary thematic platforms
- Project workshops and theory modules
- Complementary courses (theory, excursions, electives)
- A Master thesis (project + written theoretical part)

Admission
What are the admission requirements for the Bachelor?
General interest in art, design, and spatial thinking

Admission exam consisting of:
- Portfolio of artistic/creative works
- Written and practical exam
- Interview with a commission
No high school diploma (Matura) is required; admission depends on artistic aptitude.
What are the admission requirements for the Master?
You need a completed Bachelor in raum&designstrategien or an equivalent degree (minimum 6 semesters), plus a successful admission exam.
How do I apply for the Master?
- Register online at calls.kunstuni-linz.at
- Upload your portfolio as a PDF
- Take part in an admission interview (July/August), where you present your works, explain your motivation and goals, and demonstrate artistic aptitude
When will I know the admission result?
Results are usually announced approximately one week after the interview. If necessary, applicants will be informed if the process takes longer
Is there portfolio consultation before applying?
Yes! We offer a free 30-minute online consultation for questions about your portfolio or the entrance exam. Dates (April/May) are published online. Register via email: strategies.office@kunstuni-linz.at
Language Skills
What language skills are required?
Many courses are taught in English. International students must provide proof of German (B1) by the beginning of the 3rd semester.
Can I complete the whole program in English?
Yes. In this case, English proficiency at level B2 must be proven before starting your studies.

Tuition Fees
Who has to pay tuition fees?
Non-EU/EEA citizens: €726.72 per semester
Extraordinary students: €363.36 from the 3rd semester
Regular students who study more than 2 semesters longer than prescribed: €363.36 per semester

Who is exempt from tuition fees?
ustrian, EU, EEA (Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein), and Swiss citizens, as long as they complete their studies within the standard duration + 2 semesters.
Do I have to pay the ÖH fee?
Yes, all students pay the Austrian Students’ Union (ÖH) fee of €22.70 per semester.
Study Life
Can I study part-time while working?
No, the program requires around 30–40 hours per week for classes and projects.
How many students are admitted?
All applicants who pass the entrance examination confirming their artistic aptitude.
What teaching formats are used?
Lectures, seminars, project workshops, studios, excursions, working groups, and individual supervision.
How are students assessed
Through continuous performance assessment, participation, and/or final exams. Grades range from 1 (very good) to 5 (fail). Some courses (excursions, thesis supervision) are graded successfully participated / not successfully participated.
