2022 - 2023
5km/h
End of June we dared to take a step outside and into the arcade of the bridgehead building East. Connecting the art university with the city, the Nibelungen Bridge with the main square and the inside with the outside, the arcade is rather a place of passage than a place to stay. During two weeks we testet, presented, performed,... site-specific mechanisms of slowing down. 5km/h was festival, art show and performance. The speed measurement in km/h became a work-related category.
While some walk through the arcades, others let their engine roar at the at the intersection or make their way between street and building by bike. What unites them is moving forward at the Austrian-established walking speed of 5km/h. space&design strategies took 5km/h as a starting point to then stretch or squeeze it with means of art and design. Our goal was to change the use and atmosphere of the inhospitable arcade, at least temporarily. How fast or slow is a work of art? How annoying is deceleration in a passage? Is there an architecture that slows down? And how many kilometers can you actually move forward in one hour of queuing?
